    Collaborative Services Network – eHealth

Technology exists today that can connect today’s fragmented healthcare technology services to provide seamless collaborative services delivering the smallest amount of the best information to the right people at the right time to address this “information overload” problem.

    Discrete Choice Modelling/Accelerator

Essentially a content management system, DCM provides a tested means for predicting the effects on consumer demand of changes to product or service configuration, pricing, service bundling and branding activities via survey. The technology also includes process-related intellectual property in the configurability of the software, allowing for better use of the data collected. Allowing for reduced time in design and implementation, this will naturally give way to reduced cost.

    Edentiti Success Story

By linking a dedicated CRC researcher with Edentiti, Smart Internet was able to facilitate the opening of doors to research and market information previously unattainable to the SME. By supplying critical information and assisting in the identification of key methodologies, Smart Internet provided Edentiti with understanding, support and invaluable access to a pool of researchers, supplying constructive feedback and solutions.

    EMMA

The goal of EMMA was to create a reliable and easy-to-use automated e-mail sorting and filtering system, capable of taking the tedium out of dealing with large quantities of e-mail. At the same time creating a system that users could trust to sort accurately their e-mail, including prioritisation and automatic reply.

    enikos

The first commercial spin-off to arise from Smart Internet Technology research is a joint initiative between investors, the University of Wollongong and the CRC. The mission of enikos is to produce ‘middleware’ solutions based around the MPEG-21 Multimedia framework. enikos possesses IP in the area of electronic music delivery and distribution and has built partnerships with several major companies with regard to the deployment of solutions to the market.

    Homes and Communities

We are no longer limited to the screen, keyboard and mouse, or even the phone and PDA. Using a digital projector and virtual whiteboard with pens, we have created an interactive table-top display system. Users can interact with electronic objects, such as digital photographs, sounds and maps, in a similar way to natural sorting of real documents arranged on a desktop.

    Immersive Audio

Immersive Communication Environment (ICE) is a scalable voice communication system that allows groups of people to communicate effectively and naturally over the Internet.  With communication between people playing a growing role in some of the world’s most popular games such as World of Warcraft, and Counter-Strike Source, ICE is poised to drastically enhance the online gamers’ experience and capture a slice of the booming $32.6 billion interactive entertainment industry. The possibilities for the application of ICE extend beyond the realm of online games to personal communications, education, business meetings and conference calls as well as integration into future games’ software.

    InCA

InCA (Internet Conversational Agent), the ultimate personal assistant, is a prototype PC and PDA-based user interface application. Utilising conversational English InCA is able to respond accurately to requests, even when they are asked in a variety of ways. Incorporating the use of a digitised human face, InCA is capable of managing e-mail and appointments using natural language systems – making it ideal for user groups not yet familiar with smart phone or PDA technology.

    Project BlueStar

The age-old problem of getting lost. BlueStar uses small, low-cost wireless data transmitters using Bluetooth technology to send signals that can be recognised by the users’ mobile phone or PDA. Each transmitter acts as a beacon, carrying a unique digital tag, which the users’ handset automatically “sniffs” for. Application scenarios include providing specific locations such as shopping centres, university campuses or large sporting complexes.

    Project Nightingale

Nightingale aims to improve the quality of life of Australia’s aging population by developing non-desktop interfaces through which a user can access, organise and interact with their own virtual personal space. The technology developed involves using items such as scrapbooks and photographs as the means for human-computer interaction, forming the building blocks for a new generation of computer interface models.

    Research Programs

Smart Internet evolves technologies that will enable Internet services to become an integral part of human lives. Our role is to develop and commercialise robust, scalable and smart technologies that leverage and transform the Internet so that it enhances business and lifestyle, and is easier to use and manage. Our research focuses on five key programs, which interact and build on each other.

    Smart Internet Alliance Program

For SMEs, the task of keeping ahead of the innovation curve, especially when competing with much larger rivals, can appear to be an impossible task. Smart Internet is dedicated to the advancement of Australia’s broad SME community, and through working with Smart Internet’s academic, government and corporate partners, we can provide SMEs with the opportunity to engage in the type of research that most believe is beyond their capabilities.

    Smart Internet Commercialisation

Smart Internet’s Partner program engages commercial partners who draw multiple benefits from influencing and potentially profiting from the commercial potential of research being conducted. Drawing on our extensive university, Government and private sector partners, Smart Internet can mix the most advanced academic capabilities together with industry-based skills, knowledge and capabilities.
