Scholarship Program Overview

There is an acknowledged shortfall in the number of professionals with postgraduate qualifications and the appropriate set of skills at the top level of the ICT industry.

A core activity of the Smart Internet Technology CRC is its Education and Training program which aims to create a surge of capability and an environment conducive to the retention of Internet-skilled professionals.

Special emphasis is placed on increasing the number and calibre of Honours, Masters and Doctoral candidates by creating opportunities in specific CRC research activities through the national network of Research Partners. This integrated program sharply extends the upper end of existing IT skills-training initiatives.

The CRC also runs a multi-level postgraduate program designed to develop a new wave of IT specialists with strong research skills who can be prepared for leadership roles in cutting-edge technology companies.

PhD scholarships are offered on an annual basis to students of the highest aptitude.

The Education Program Incorporates:

  • Scholarship Promotion - Program managers identify and select suitable candidates for scholarships from partner universities. Students who meet the specified criteria then qualify for a scholarship.
  • Student Training - Over the last year, Smart Internet has continued a training program for scholarship students comprised of training in important non-technical areas of study such as entrepreneurialism, commercialisation, IP management and project management.
  • Student Collaboration - Twice a year, researchers and students from around Australia have the opportunity to get together and share their progress in research activities and benefit from the presentations of industry experts on both technical and commercial skills.
  • Annual Conference - An annual conference is run every year to draw together the Smart Internet Technology Community in Australia.

The Priorities are to:

  • Increase the number and calibre of IT Masters and Honours students.
  • Offer full and top-up scholarships to PhD Students.
  • Develop a community of Honours, Masters, PhD, post-Doctoral, academic supervisors and industry researchers.
  • Provide graduate student training in team and collaboration skills.
  • Facilitate advanced work for graduate students in partner facilities.
  • Promote and develop an awareness of Smart Internet activities through conferences, seminars, workshops and publications.
